Comparing the lifetime costs of block paving and stamped concrete driveways

In shortBlock paving and stamped concrete differ less in the first invoice than in what happens later. Pavers can be lifted and relaid where the base sinks or a pipe needs reaching, from 30 € per m² plus IVA on the affected zone. Stamped concrete cannot be lifted; cracks are filled and the surface can be renovated at 15 € per m² plus IVA, but sinking means breaking it out. Our turnkey block paving rate is 84 € per m² plus IVA.

Which is cheaper, block paving or stamped concrete?

It depends on whether you look only at the first invoice or at the whole life of the driveway. Our turnkey rate for block paving is 84 € per m² plus IVA up to 150 m², including base layers, 10×20×6 cm concrete pavers, gravel bed and kerbs. We also pour new stamped concrete, but there is no published unit price for it: each slab is quoted individually from photos and the m², so both options can be compared side by side on the same area.

What we can compare from our own work is what each surface costs to look after once it exists. That is where the two differ most: block paving is a surface of separate units on a flexible bed, while stamped concrete, also called imprinted concrete or hormigón impreso, is a continuous slab with a pattern pressed into it. Those two structures behave very differently when something goes wrong.

Owners sometimes add resin-bound surfaces to the comparison and ask whether block paving is cheaper than a resin driveway. The same logic applies: we do not lay resin-bound systems, so the useful comparison is between our itemised paving quote and a specialist's itemised quote on the same area, with the base work, edges and drainage stated in both. Treat a single headline figure per m² with caution until you know which layers it includes.

What happens to the cost when the base sinks?

With block paving, a sunken zone can be lifted, the base corrected and the same pavers relaid. Our rate for that starts from 30 € per m² plus IVA and is charged only on the area lifted. On a drive where only the wheel tracks have dropped, the repair touches a small share of the surface.

With stamped concrete, there is nothing to lift. If the ground under a slab settles, the slab cracks or tilts, and a lasting fix means cutting out and breaking up the affected section, rebuilding the base and casting new concrete. Matching the pattern and colour of the surrounding slab is difficult, so the repair often remains visible. That difference is the main reason owners with doubtful ground choose pavers. The detail of the repair rate is on the paving repair cost page, and our sister site covers sunken garage entrances and wheel tracks.

What about access to pipes and cables underneath?

This is a cost factor that rarely appears in the first comparison but matters on many villas. Water pipes, irrigation lines, electrical ducts for gates and lighting often run under the driveway. When one of them needs attention, a paved surface can be opened along the line and closed again with the same blocks.

On stamped concrete, reaching the same pipe means cutting a trench through the slab and patching it afterwards. The patch is rarely invisible. If you expect future work under the drive, for example adding an electric gate, a charging point or garden lighting, that possibility counts in favour of block paving.

  • Block paving: lift along the line, do the work, rebuild the base, relay the same pavers.
  • Stamped concrete: saw-cut, break out, do the work, recast and try to match the pattern.
  • In both cases the cost of the service work itself is separate from the surface repair.

How do renovation and resealing costs compare?

Here the two surfaces are closer. Both block paving and stamped concrete can be renovated without replacement when they are structurally sound but faded, stained or lightly cracked. Our renovation rate is 15 € per m² plus IVA, covering pressure washing, filling cracks and holes, masking the edges, tinted acrylic resin in two coats and a final protective coat.

For stamped concrete, this kind of renovation is the most common way to refresh a tired driveway, because the alternative is demolition. The sample on our 350 m² restoration quote shows each line of a real job. For block paving, owners can also choose cleaning and re-sanding of the joints, and renovation becomes one option among several.

The cost to reseal stamped concrete, sometimes quoted on its own, corresponds in our pricing to the optional protective coat, which is 1,50 € per m² in the sample quote. Resealing alone does not fill cracks or change colour, so check what any quote labelled as resealing actually includes.

Which cost factors favour each surface?

Neither surface is cheaper in every case. The table below summarises which factors tend to favour which option, based on how each one is built and repaired. Use it as a checklist, not a verdict; the right answer depends on your ground, your plans and the look you prefer.

If you already have a stamped concrete drive that is sound, renovation is usually the most economical route. If it has sunk or broken in large areas, replacing it with block paving gives you a surface that is easier to repair next time. For the broader set of cost drivers, see cost factors for paving.

How do I get both options priced for my driveway?

For block paving and for renovating an existing stamped concrete drive, we can quote directly from photos and the area. A new stamped concrete slab, which we also pour, is quoted individually from photos and the m² rather than from a published rate, so you can set it beside our turnkey paving figure for the same area, with IVA shown separately in both.

If you are torn between the two, tell us which matters more to you: the lowest first invoice, the easiest future repairs, or a particular look. That shapes which options we put in the quote and which questions we ask about the ground. Include a photo of any cracks, sunken zones and the access to the drive, and mention whether you plan work under the surface in the future. Frequently asked questions

Is block paving cheaper than stamped concrete?

It depends on the timescale. We publish a turnkey block paving rate of 84 € per m² plus IVA; new stamped concrete, which we also pour, has no published rate and is quoted individually from photos and m². Over time, block paving is usually cheaper to repair after sinking or pipe work.

How much does it cost to renovate stamped concrete?

Our renovation rate is 15 € per m² plus IVA, covering pressure washing, crack and hole repair, edge masking, two coats of tinted acrylic resin and a protective coat. The surface must be stable; sunken slabs need structural repair first.

Can stamped concrete be repaired like block paving?

Not in the same way. Pavers can be lifted and relaid; a concrete slab cannot. Cracks can be filled and the surface renovated, but if the slab has sunk, the section has to be cut out, the base rebuilt and new concrete cast.

What does it cost to reseal stamped concrete?

In our pricing, a final protective coat corresponds to 1,50 € per m² in the 350 m² sample quote, as an optional line. Resealing alone does not repair cracks or change the colour, so check what a resealing quote includes.

Which is better if pipes run under my driveway?

Block paving, because it can be opened along the pipe and closed with the same pavers. On stamped concrete a trench has to be saw-cut and patched, and the patch usually remains visible afterwards.

Do you install new stamped concrete?

Yes. Besides laying block paving and renovating existing surfaces, we also pour new stamped concrete. There is no published unit price for it; each slab is quoted individually from photos and the approximate m², so you can compare it with our block paving figure on the same area.

Can I replace a broken stamped concrete drive with block paving?

Yes. The old slab is broken up and removed, the base is rebuilt and new pavers are laid. Demolition and rubble disposal appear as separate lines, and the new surface is priced on the turnkey rate.

Can block paving be renovated at the same rate?

Yes, the renovation rate of 15 € per m² plus IVA applies to stamped concrete, plain concrete and pavers, provided the surface is stable. For pavers, cleaning and re-sanding the joints is another option to discuss.

Does a sunken stamped concrete slab qualify for renovation?

No. Renovation works on stable surfaces only. A coating over a slab that has sunk or is moving would crack along the same lines. The cause of the movement has to be dealt with first.

Which surface is easier to match after a repair?

Block paving, because the original pavers are reused when a zone is relaid. On stamped concrete, matching the pattern and colour of the surrounding slab in a new section is difficult and often visible.
