How much does block paving cost per m²?
New block paving costs €84 per m² plus IVA when we supply and build everything, or €16 per m² plus IVA when we only lay pavers on a base that already exists or with material you have bought. Both figures are indicative and assume a typical domestic site; the written quote confirms the rate for your property once we have seen it.
| Rate | Net per m² | With IVA (21 %) | Applies when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labour-only | €16 + IVA | €19.36 | You provide the pavers, or a sound base is already in place |
| Turnkey | €84 + IVA | €101.64 | We build the whole surface, from sub-base to kerbs, on areas up to 150 m² |
| Turnkey above 150 m² | Individual quote | Individual quote | Larger areas, where a discount is studied case by case |
People searching for a block paving price guide often find figures per square foot or per square yard taken from British or American sites. Those numbers do not translate to Spain, where materials, labour and VAT are different. Here every figure is per square metre and refers to work carried out in Málaga province, so you can multiply it by your own measured area without converting anything.
What does the €84 turnkey rate actually include?
The turnkey rate includes every layer of a standard block paved surface, plus the edging and the paperwork that goes with the job. It is designed so that a single price per m² covers a finished driveway, path or patio, ready to use, rather than a list of separate trades.
- Zahorra: a compacted layer of graded crushed aggregate that forms the load-bearing sub-base.
- Soil-cement (suelo-cemento): a stabilised layer that stiffens the base and spreads the load from vehicles.
- Grit bed (cama de gravilla): the thin, screeded layer on which the pavers are set to level.
- Concrete pavers measuring 10×20×6 cm, the standard format used for this rate.
- Kerbs along the edges, which stop the surface from spreading outwards over time.
- Documentation for the job, described in the written quote.
What is not included is the work that depends entirely on your site: lifting old paving or concrete, removing the resulting rubble, digging out unsuitable ground, or building drainage channels where water has nowhere to go. Those items are priced separately and named in the quote. The page on what a paving quote includes lists them in full.
When does the €16 labour-only rate make sense?
Labour-only makes sense when the expensive parts of the job, the material or the base, are already taken care of. The rate covers placing the pavers, setting them level, filling the joints and running the compactor over the finished surface, and nothing else.
Typical cases include owners who bought pavers to match an existing area, villas where a builder has left a prepared and compacted base, or a second phase of paving where material was ordered in advance. Kerbs are not part of this rate, so if edging is needed it appears as its own line. The guide on labour-only or turnkey walks through how to decide, and the article who the turnkey package is for looks at the opposite case.
One caution: labour-only assumes the base is sound. If we find that the existing sub-base is thin, loose or badly drained, laying new pavers on it would only reproduce the problems of the old surface. In that situation we explain what we see and quote the base work separately, so you can decide with the full picture in front of you.
How do you work out the cost of a block paved driveway?
Multiply the measured area by the applicable rate, then add IVA and any site-specific items. That simple calculation gives you a realistic starting point for a driveway, patio or path before anyone visits, and it is the same calculation our quote is built on.
| Example area | Turnkey net (€84/m²) | Turnkey with IVA | Labour-only net (€16/m²) | Labour-only with IVA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 m² path or small patio | €2,520 | €3,049.20 | €480 | €580.80 |
| 60 m² driveway | €5,040 | €6,098.40 | €960 | €1,161.60 |
| 120 m² driveway and parking | €10,080 | €12,196.80 | €1,920 | €2,323.20 |
These examples are arithmetic on the published rates, not quotes for real properties. They leave out removal of old paving, extra kerbs and drainage, which vary from one site to the next. For a quick band with your own figure, use the paving cost calculator, which returns a rounded range without and with IVA.
Measuring accurately matters more than most people expect. Ten square metres too many or too few shifts the turnkey total by hundreds of euros. The guide on measuring square metres explains how to split an irregular plot into rectangles and how to treat curves, steps and planting beds.
What can make your price per m² different from the published rate?
The site itself is what moves the price: access, slope, the state of the ground and the amount of demolition. The published rates describe a level area reached easily from the street, with ordinary soil underneath and nothing to remove.
- Access: steps, narrow gates or a garden above street level mean material is moved by hand or small machine.
- Slope: a steep drive needs more attention to falls and to where the water ends up.
- Existing surface: old concrete or broken paving has to be lifted and the rubble taken away.
- Edges: many curves, kerbs or junctions with walls and steps add cutting and setting time.
- Material: natural stone, clay pavers or permeable systems change the material share of the price.
Each factor is explained with examples on the page about what drives paving costs. If you are weighing block paving against a poured alternative, the article block paving versus stamped concrete costs compares the factors behind each option, including which one is easier and cheaper to repair if a section ever needs lifting.
Which paver and pattern does the rate assume?
The turnkey rate assumes a 10×20×6 cm concrete paver, a format widely used for domestic paths, patios and car driveways. Other formats, thicker pavers for heavier traffic, natural stone or clay pavers can all be quoted, with the difference in material shown as a separate line.
Concrete paving blocks are covered by the European standard UNE-EN 1338 and its Spanish complement UNE 127338, and concrete kerbs by UNE-EN 1340. If you want to compare materials before deciding, our sister site has a detailed page on concrete block paving formats and colours, and the laying patterns themselves are explained in herringbone, stretcher bond and other patterns.
How do you turn these prices into a firm quote?
Send us a photo and the approximate m² – free, no-obligation quote. Wide shots of the whole area, a picture of the access from the street and a short note on how the surface will be used are enough for a first figure based on these rates.
For owners who are not in Spain, the whole process can stay in English, by email or messaging. The guide on quotes from photos lists the shots that save the most back-and-forth. When you accept the figure, a visit confirms the measurements and the details before any work is scheduled.
Frequently asked questions
How much does block paving cost per m² in Málaga?
Turnkey block paving costs €84 per m² plus IVA for areas up to 150 m², including sub-base, soil-cement, 10×20×6 cm concrete pavers, grit bed, kerbs and documentation. Labour-only costs €16 per m² plus IVA. Both are indicative rates confirmed in a written quote.
What is the price per m² including IVA?
With IVA at 21 %, the turnkey rate of €84 becomes €101.64 per m² and the labour-only rate of €16 becomes €19.36 per m². Our quotes always show the net amount and the amount with IVA side by side so you can see both.
Are kerbs included in the labour-only rate?
No. Labour-only covers laying, levelling, jointing and compaction of the pavers. If the area needs kerbs or edging, they are priced as a separate item. In the turnkey rate, by contrast, kerbs are already included in the price per m².
Is removal of my old driveway included?
Removing existing paving or concrete is not part of either rate, because the quantity and type of rubble differ greatly between properties. It is quoted as its own line, together with taking the waste away, so you can see exactly what it adds.
What happens if my area is larger than 150 m²?
Above 150 m² the turnkey rate is not applied automatically. The job is studied individually and a discount may be offered, because fixed costs are spread over a larger area. We do not publish a figure for this case; send photos and the measurement.
Can I supply my own pavers?
Yes. If you supply the pavers, the labour-only rate of €16 per m² plus IVA applies to laying them, provided the base is suitable. If the base needs building or correcting, that part is quoted separately after we have seen it.
Does the price change for a driveway used by cars?
The turnkey rate is designed for a standard domestic build-up, including car driveways. Heavier traffic, such as vans or delivery lorries, may call for a different paver thickness or base, and any such change is shown in the quote.
Why do UK block paving prices look so different?
British prices are usually quoted per square metre or square foot in pounds, with different labour costs, materials and VAT. They are not a reliable guide for Spain. Our rates are in euros per square metre, plus IVA, for work in Málaga province.
Can I mix labour-only and turnkey on one job?
Yes, when part of the area already has a sound base and part needs building from scratch. Each part is measured and priced at its own rate, and the quote shows both lines so the total is easy to check.
Does the rate include a choice of colour?
The turnkey rate is based on a standard 10×20×6 cm concrete paver. Many colours and blends exist in that format; if your choice is a different format, a premium finish or a natural material, the material difference is shown separately in the quote.
