How much does block paving cost per m² in Málaga province?
The short answer is that most domestic paving jobs in Málaga province fall into one of four published rates, all quoted per square metre and all excluding Spanish VAT, which is called IVA and is charged at 21 %. The figures below are indicative (orientativo): they describe a typical job, and the firm quote for your property is written once we have seen photos and know the approximate area.
| Service | Indicative rate (net) | Same rate with IVA at 21 % | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laying only (labour, no material) | €16/m² + IVA | €19.36/m² | Laying, levelling, jointing and compaction on an existing base or with material you supply; kerbs priced separately |
| Turnkey block paving, up to 150 m² | €84/m² + IVA | €101.64/m² | Zahorra sub-base, soil-cement layer, 10×20×6 cm concrete pavers, grit bed, kerbs and documentation |
| Sunken paver repair | from €30/m² + IVA | from €36.30/m² | Lifting the pavers, correcting the base and relaying them |
| Restoration without replacing | €15/m² + IVA | €18.15/m² | Pressure washing, crack and hole filling, edge masking, tinted acrylic resin in two coats, final protective coat |
Publishing prices is the whole point of this website. Many owners, especially those who live abroad for part of the year, find it hard to judge whether a quote for a driveway, patio or pool surround is reasonable when nobody will put a number on the table first. A published rate per m² gives you a fixed reference point before anyone visits, and it makes the conversation about your own job far more concrete from the very first message.
Each rate has its own detailed page. Start with block paving cost per m² for new paving, the cost of repairing sunken pavers if part of your drive has dropped, or restoration cost if the surface is sound but faded and cracked. The online price calculator turns any of these rates into an approximate band for your area.
What is included in each published rate?
A price per m² only means something when you know what sits behind it. Two quotes can show the same number and describe completely different amounts of work, so each of our rates comes with a fixed list of inclusions. Anything not on that list is priced separately and named in the written quote, so nothing appears later as a surprise extra.
- Laying only, €16/m² + IVA: placing the pavers, levelling them, filling the joints and compacting the surface. You supply the material, or the base is already built. Kerbs are not included.
- Turnkey, €84/m² + IVA up to 150 m²: the complete build-up from zahorra (compacted crushed aggregate) and a soil-cement layer, through the grit bed, to 10×20×6 cm concrete pavers, kerbs and the documentation for the job.
- Sunken paver repair, from €30/m² + IVA: lifting the affected pavers, correcting the base underneath and relaying them. The word 'from' matters, because the depth of the problem varies.
- Restoration, €15/m² + IVA: pressure washing, filling cracks and holes with acrylic filler or mortar, masking the edges with tape, tinted acrylic resin in two coats and a final protective coat.
If you want the full breakdown, including the items that are usually left out of paving quotes, the page on what a quote includes and excludes goes through them one by one. The article on items that often go missing from paving quotes is a useful checklist before you sign anything with any contractor.
Why are the prices indicative rather than fixed?
They are indicative because the cost of paving is driven by the site as much as by the area. A flat, open front garden reached straight from the street costs less per m² to pave than a terraced plot above the road, where every bag of aggregate has to be carried by hand. The published rates describe the common case, and the quote adjusts for what your property actually needs.
The factors that move a figure up or down are well known: the condition of the existing ground, how much old paving or concrete has to be removed and taken away, the slope and how rainwater has to drain, the number of kerbs and edges, and the material you choose. Each of these is explained on the page about cost factors and in the guide on what pushes the price up.
A turnkey job larger than 150 m² is not priced at the standard rate at all. Larger areas are studied individually, because the fixed parts of a job such as setting up, delivery and machinery are spread over more square metres. We do not publish a figure for that case; it is worked out for your specific area and site.
How do you get a firm quote while living abroad?
You get it by sending photos and an approximate measurement; nobody needs to meet you on site for a first figure. Many of the properties we price on the Costa del Sol are second homes, and their owners spend much of the year in another country. Everything, including the written quote, can be handled in English by email or messaging.
- Take a few wide photos that show the whole area, plus close-ups of any cracks, sunken patches or loose pavers.
- Measure length and width roughly, or count paces, and send the approximate m².
- Tell us how the area is used: cars, pedestrians, a pool surround or a terrace.
- Say how you reach the area from the street and whether there are steps or narrow gates.
- We reply with an indicative figure and, if it suits you, arrange a visit to confirm it.
The guide on getting a quote from photos shows which pictures help most, and how to measure square metres explains how to deal with curves, steps and irregular plots. If a property manager or neighbour looks after the house while you are away, they can send the photos for you.
Should you choose labour-only or the turnkey package?
Choose labour-only when the material is already bought or the base is already built, and turnkey when you want one contractor to handle the whole build-up. The two rates look very different on paper, but they cover very different scopes, so comparing €16 with €84 directly would be misleading.
Labour-only suits owners who have pavers left over from a previous phase, who want a specific stone or colour they have sourced themselves, or whose builder has already prepared a sound base. Turnkey suits most new driveways, patios and paths, because it puts the sub-base, the bedding, the pavers and the kerbs under a single price per m² that you can check against the area. The guide on labour-only versus turnkey and the article which option suits which situation compare both in detail.
When is restoring cheaper than replacing?
Restoration is the cheaper route when the surface is level and stable but looks worn, stained or patchy. At €15/m² + IVA, cleaning, filling cracks and applying a tinted acrylic resin costs a fraction of lifting the old surface and building a new one, and there is no rubble to remove.
It is not the right answer when the paving has sunk, rocks underfoot or holds water in hollows, because a coating does nothing for a weak base. A real example helps here: the restoration page shows an anonymised quote for 350 m², line by line, so you can see how the total of the sample 350 m² quote is built. The technique itself, from pressure washing to the final coat, is covered by our sister site stamped concrete renovation.
What does it cost to fix a sinking driveway?
Repairing sunken block paving starts at €30/m² + IVA, covering lifting, base correction and relaying. The rate starts there because a shallow dip under a wheel track is a very different job from a section that has dropped over a collapsed trench or around an inspection chamber.
In many cases the original pavers can be cleaned and put back, which keeps the cost down and the colour consistent. The page on paving repair cost explains what moves the figure above the starting rate. To understand why paving sinks in the first place, the specialist repair site diagnosing the cause of sinking goes into the technical side.
How does the online calculator work?
The calculator asks for two things, the type of service and the approximate m², and returns a rounded price band both without and with IVA at 21 %. The calculation runs on the server using the same published rates, so the band you see is consistent with the figures on this page.
It is deliberately rounded: a band tells you whether your budget is realistic without pretending to know the details of your site. For turnkey paving above 150 m² the calculator does not give a band and instead invites you to request an individual quote. Try it on the price calculator page.
Which paperwork and community rules can affect the budget?
Paperwork rarely changes the price per m², but it can change what has to be arranged before work starts. In Andalusia, Law 7/2021 (LISTA), article 138.1.a), places minor works of limited constructive scope that need no project under a declaración responsable, a responsible declaration filed with the town hall. Each town hall's own ordinance decides which procedure applies to a given paving job.
- Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola, Mijas and other towns: the procedure for outdoor paving is set in each current municipal ordinance, which the town hall can confirm for your job.
- Work touching the public pavement or a kerb drop for a vehicle crossing (vado) needs separate municipal authorisation, under conditions set by each town hall's ordinance.
- In a community of owners, work on common elements needs a resolution of the owners' meeting under article 17 of the Horizontal Property Law; the exact majority for your job is something your administrator can confirm.
We carry out the works; we do not draft projects, permits or geotechnical studies. What we can do is describe the job clearly in the quote so that you, your administrator or your gestor have what is needed for the town hall. Rubble from minor domestic works is treated as household waste under Law 7/2022, and its removal is listed as a separate item where it applies.
How should you compare two paving quotes?
Compare what each quote includes before you compare the totals. A lower figure per m² that leaves out the sub-base, the kerbs or the removal of old paving is not cheaper; it is simply describing less work, and the missing items return later as extras.
Put the quotes side by side and check the area measured, the layers in the build-up, the paver format and thickness, the edging, waste removal and whether IVA is included. The guide on comparing paving quotes gives a checklist, and the article why two paving quotes are rarely comparable explains the most common traps. Our checklist before asking for a quote helps you prepare the information in advance.
Who is behind this price website?
Precio Adoquinado is run by Bauman Raymond Attila, a self-employed paving contractor (autónomo) based in Marbella who works across the whole province of Málaga. The same autónomo runs six related websites, each focused on one part of the job, and this one exists only to publish prices and explain how quotes are built.
If you want to read about materials and the layers under the paving, see concrete block paving. For driveways and parking areas there is driveway paving, and for terraces and pool surrounds paving around a pool. Whichever site you start on, the prices you are quoted are the ones published here. For restoration coatings, we work with Mapei products.
When you are ready, send us a photo and the approximate m² – free, no-obligation quote. Tell us whether you are on the coast or inland, how the area is reached and how it will be used, and we will reply with a figure based on the published rates and a short list of anything specific to your site.
