What decides the price of a new driveway?
Two things decide it: the rate for the type of work, and the conditions of your site. The rate is published, so the real variable is the site, and that is where most of the difference between two driveways of the same size comes from.
| Service | Indicative rate | With IVA (21 %) |
|---|---|---|
| Restoration without replacing | €15/m² + IVA | €18.15/m² |
| Laying only | €16/m² + IVA | €19.36/m² |
| Sunken paver repair | from €30/m² + IVA | from €36.30/m² |
| Turnkey block paving, up to 150 m² | €84/m² + IVA | €101.64/m² |
The gap between the labour-only and turnkey rates, €68 per m², shows roughly what the turnkey package adds on top of laying alone. It covers the zahorra, soil-cement, grit, 10×20×6 cm pavers and kerbs, together with the work of building those layers and setting the edging. When someone asks what the labour cost to block pave a driveway is, compared with the supply cost, that difference is the honest answer for a standard build.
How does the size of the area affect the cost per m²?
Size changes the total in proportion and, at the extremes, changes the rate itself. Every job has fixed elements: bringing tools and a compactor, arranging deliveries, setting out levels. On a small area those fixed elements weigh more per m²; on a large one they are spread thinly.
That is why turnkey areas above 150 m² are studied individually, with a discount possible, and why very small jobs may be quoted above the published rate. Combining several small areas, for example a path and a parking strip, into one job is often more economical than doing them separately. Accurate measuring matters here, and the guide on measuring square metres shows how to do it.
Why does access make such a difference?
Because every tonne of aggregate, every pallet of pavers and every load of rubble has to travel between the street and the work area. If a lorry can unload beside the driveway and a small machine can work directly on it, the job runs efficiently; if everything goes by wheelbarrow through a side gate or up garden steps, labour per m² rises considerably.
Access deserves attention on any property where the work area is not beside the road. A villa may sit above or below street level, a lane in an urbanización may be too narrow for a lorry to stop, or a terraced plot may have only a pedestrian route to the back garden. A photo taken from the street, showing the route to the area, is one of the most useful pictures you can send with a request.
How do the ground and the existing surface change the price?
They decide how much work is needed before the new surface can be built. A clean, firm area of earth is the simplest starting point. An old concrete slab, broken paving, tiles or a mix of materials all have to be lifted, broken up and removed first.
- Old paving or concrete to lift: adds demolition time and waste removal.
- Soft or organic ground: may need digging out and replacing with suitable fill.
- Service trenches, chambers or irrigation lines: need care around them and often local base work.
- Tree roots near the surface: may require root work and a reinforced detail at that point.
- Existing sound base: can allow the labour-only rate instead of turnkey.
If the surface is old but level and stable, the cheapest route may not involve new paving at all. Restoration at €15 per m² plus IVA cleans, repairs and recoats the existing surface; see restoration cost for what it includes and a real 350 m² example. If only parts have sunk, repair from €30 per m² plus IVA is the alternative, explained on paving repair cost.
What role do slope and drainage play?
Every paved surface needs falls so that rainwater runs off, and the more the existing ground fights those falls, the more work is involved. A flat front garden that drains towards the street is straightforward; a drive sloping towards the garage door needs a channel at the bottom, and a hillside drive may need careful shaping along its whole length.
Drainage items such as channels and gullies are priced separately, because not every site needs them. Where water has caused sinking in the past, correcting it is part of a durable repair, and our specialist site explains puddles, channels and falls. For steep driveways specifically, the driveway site has a page on ramps and sloping entrances.
How much do kerbs, edges and cuts add?
Kerbs are included in the turnkey rate but priced separately for labour-only work. Beyond that, the shape of the area matters: a simple rectangle has few cuts, while curves, steps, walls, planters, pool copings and inspection covers all need pavers cut individually.
An irregular area with a lot of perimeter relative to its surface takes longer per m² than a regular one, even with the same material. Laying patterns also play a part: a herringbone at 45 degrees produces more cuts at the edges than a simple stretcher bond. If you are choosing between patterns, our materials site compares them on its page about laying patterns.
Does the choice of material change the cost?
Yes, and it is usually the most visible choice. The turnkey rate is based on a 10×20×6 cm concrete paver. Larger formats, thicker blocks, special finishes, natural stone, clay pavers and permeable systems each change the material share, and some take longer to lay.
In our quotes the standard rate stays in place and a separate line shows the material difference, so you can judge the choice on its own merits. If you are weighing block paving against stamped concrete, the article block paving or stamped concrete: cost factors compared looks at the trade-offs. The guide on what pushes the price up and the article what block paving costs per m² in Málaga put all of these factors together with worked examples.

Frequently asked questions
What affects the cost of a new driveway most?
After the rate for the type of work, the biggest factors are access for materials and machinery, the amount of old surface to remove, the condition of the ground, slope and drainage, and the material chosen. A photo of the route from the street is one of the most useful things to send.
What is the supply cost versus the labour cost of block paving?
Labour-only laying costs €16 per m² plus IVA, and turnkey costs €84 per m² plus IVA. The difference of €68 per m² covers the sub-base, soil-cement, grit bed, pavers and kerbs, together with the work of building those layers and setting the edges.
How much does it cost to replace an entire driveway?
New turnkey paving costs €84 per m² plus IVA up to 150 m², but replacing a driveway also involves lifting the old surface and removing the rubble, which are priced separately. The total therefore depends on the existing surface and access; send photos for a figure.
Is driveway resurfacing cheaper than replacing?
Usually yes, if the surface is stable. Restoration at €15 per m² plus IVA cleans, repairs cracks and applies a tinted acrylic resin and protective coat without demolition. It is not suitable when the surface has sunk or broken through.
How much does pressure washing a driveway cost?
Pressure washing is the first stage of our €15 per m² restoration rate. In our anonymised 350 m² sample quote it was priced at €1.20 per m² as its own line. Washing on its own, without the other stages, is quoted on request.
Does a sloping driveway cost more?
Often, yes. Slopes need careful shaping of the falls and frequently a channel at the low point so water does not run towards the garage or house. Drainage items are quoted separately, and difficult slopes may also slow down the laying itself.
Why is my small patio more expensive per m² than a large driveway?
Every job has fixed costs such as transport, tools and setting out. On a small area those costs weigh more per square metre. Combining several small areas into one job, or adding them to a larger one, usually lowers the rate.
Do curves and pool edges increase the cost?
Yes. Curves, steps, pool copings, walls and inspection covers all require pavers to be cut individually, which takes more time per m². A simple rectangular area with few obstacles costs less to lay than an irregular one of the same size.
What affects stamped concrete driveway costs?
For restoring an existing stamped concrete drive, the main factors are the amount of crack and hole repair, the number of edges to mask and the total area. Our rate is €15 per m² plus IVA, with a real 350 m² example shown on the restoration cost page.
Does the location within Málaga province change the price?
The published rates per m² are the same across the province. What changes from one property to another is access, slope, ground and existing surface, which are the factors that appear in the quote. Distance is taken into account only where it materially affects the job.
